Richmond, Indiana

Mummy Town, U.S.A.

Richmond boasts the highest concentration of Egyptian mummies per capita in all of North America.

Here's where you can find them:

Wayne County Historical Museum This museum houses a 3,000-year-old man mummy, purchased in Egypt in 1929 by the museum’s founder, Julia Meek Gaar. They have an “Egyptian Room” with the mummy, its coffin, and related artifacts. You can even see a 3D recreation of the mummy’s face.

Joseph Moore Museum of Natural History at Earlham College This museum is home to a lady mummy named Lady Ta’an, brought to Earlham from Egypt in 1889 by a former college president. Lady Ta’an is one of the museum’s most popular attractions and survived a major fire in 1924.
